where's everyone from?

So, based upon what I know of Tribe's overall demographics, I'd say the majority of folks are from the Bay Area, with decent representation from NY and LA.

Where's everyone else at?

And moreover, how's the select of asian restaurants where you live?

I'm in SF, and have particularly enjoyed the range of restaurants it has to offer--there's excellent, traditional style sushi (i'm a snob), burmese food, and tons of the usual suspects: korean, indian, vietnamese, chinese, etc...

Columbus, Ohio. With a major Honda manufacturing facility close by and Ohio State University, I think we have a reasonably good selection of Asian restaurants here. But I suspect this is relative. Good for a medium-size midwestern city, but maybe not so good compared to the more urban left and right coasts. :)

Born in Sydney, Australia, schooled in the U.S. of A. Lived in Los Angeles for 19 years before crossing the "pond" and now am in London. For those of you in L.A., feel very VERY fortunate you have such a diverse Asian cuisine at your disposal...truly, places like the San Gabriel Valley, and out by Walnut/Diamond Bar, and down in Torrance and Westminster are one of a kind. Southern California is a MECCA of Asian food.

London, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired in that sense. "Chinese" food consists of generic Cantonese rice and noodle dishes, and dimsum. Japanese food is expensive, as is Korean, and they are just getting Vietnamese in. But think _stripped down_ menus. Generic. You won't get your stand-alone specialty ramen or noodle house here. You won't get soon dobu houses. Hawaiian plate lunches? 24-7 Hong Kong cafes? Forget it. They can't even get boba tea right here. I'm so bored of the Chinese food here but it's all they got, and wonder why no one bothers to get a bit more experimental. I am guessing the gwai lo can't hang...

Hmm... that sounds kind of depressing. How do you deal?

You enjoy every minute of the meal and of being with friends. I miss the variety, no doubt, but as I said, there is no other place like Southern California, no other place in the world. When you realise that, you just deal and treat the food differently. It's a different story when I come back to visit LA -- I'm a non-stop eating machine!

Isn't the Indian food good there, at least?

I still remember being in London at the age of 6 or so. There was a meal where they served me a big slab of rubbery, boiled meat with mint jelly. I didn't know what to do with it.

yes, the indian food here is plentiful and delicious. america has prevalent chinese food, but here in the UK, indian food is considered the national cuisine. ;)

i lived in san francisco until last year, when gary told me the town wasn't big enough for the two of us.

korean food in seoul is awesome. ^_^ fire chicken, upscale galbi, homemade dubu specialty joints that serve kongbijee, all veggie temple-style bibimbap, any of those mushroom hot pot dishes that end in them frying rice in the concentrated soup dregs. and thanks to globalization and a wave of migrant workers, there's pretty yummy indian in the more working class district with all the nepali workers. bad thai, expensive vietnamese, and we've never found good sushi here (though that may be because i can't afford to go to the swank int'l chain hotels). the korean-chinese food is like american-chinese food in that it resembles nothing that i've ever seen in a chinese restaurant in a city with a chinese american population, but is damn tasty anyway.

I think it's baffling that you can't find good sushi. Of the non-Japanese-run sushi places in SF, I'd have to say the Korean-run ones tend to be better than the Chinese-run ones. But it could just be my self-hatred clouding my taste buds.

btw, what qualifies as upscale galbi?

      does:

      regular galbi::upscale galbi

      as

      sirloin::kobe beef

      ?

Yup, from the Bay Area - East Bay that is *giggle*. Lots and alot of "yummy in my tummy" Asian Cuisine. Vietamese, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian (Rice Plates), Taiwanese, Indian, Thai... and so on.`Then there is your side of the bay (talking a quick BART ride away) and there's even more to choose from. Weeeeeeeee!

So, where are the good Hawaiian places?

There's Hukilau in SF, and then there's this place in the Sunset that keeps opening and closing...

I'm living in Vancouver, originally born and raised in Toronto.
The Asian food in Vancouver is the best kind of food
        for going out.
loads of Chinese and Japanese joints.
the western restaurants are mostly condiments.
Loads of cheap dim sum joints, and all you
        can eat sushi's....

        mmmm.... i'm hungry now.

lol as a proud filipino... im akin to say that some of our filipino restaurants in the bay are not as good as home cooked fiipino meals...

          some notable exceptions

Max's Restaurant in South San Francisco
          and
          the Patio in San Bruno

other than that there is no real home style cooked meal, which is by far my favorite type of filipino food...its so much more passionate...

as for other asian restaurants... i tend to go to Thanh Long (the original Crustacean) for Vietnamese and I get intensely irritated at the amount of thai restaurants, that serve mediocre cuisine ( I live in the Castro where apparently there is a Thai Restaurant on every block)

ive never tried Burmese food.. but i am willing to try

Okay, sooo I cheat on this one.*giggle* I've talked the owners at Anna's Place (El Cerrito) into making rice plate for me (i.e. chili over rice, etc). The previous owner loved Hawaii and understood what I was looking for and this was passed on to the new owners. *smile* See it pays to be a good, regular customer.

And since L&L in San Pablo closed long ago (the Hercules one is just not the same), I really do not know of any "good" Hawaii rice plate places. There are several "Hawaiian BBQ" places springing up everywhere but I have yet to eat at one that reminds me of Hawaii. But hey, I'll keep looking. ^_^

I still live in Dublin, CA, with Mom.

Pretty decent selection of Asian restaurants here, considering we're so suburban. We now have two tapioca places (wow!), my favorite being the independently-run Cafe Tapioca.

      Vancouver/Sunshine Coast BC represent.

On the Sunshine Coast the asian presence is slowly growing with filipino's especially seen clamming in Porpoise Bay. Vancouver aka Lotusland is a large portion asian and i've been a part of Asian Heritage Month and an Asian arts collective in the past.

San Diego you can get about any type of asian food you want. you can even go to the asian markets and get your seafood fresh, where your white friends can trip out and poke at the live crabs with tongs.

Gary, I echo your praise on the selection of Asian restaurants in SF. I live here too and the sushi here's great...korean, indian...etc etc...plus, the chinese food here is actually really authentic. I mean, if you want the chop suey, sweet and sour pork type of stuff, there are those too, but there are quite a few authentic places here; both formal dining and casual.
