The demise of AZN TV.

So, for the longest time, folks lamented the lack of an Asian American TV network featuring Asian American programming (as opposed to simply playing language-specific programs here in states: wacky Japanese game shows, tear-jerking Korean soap operas, epic Bollywood films etc...)

Then, all of a sudden, two major players emerged pretty much out of nowhere: AZN (formerly the International Channel), and Imaginasian.

AZN was purchased by Comcast sometime last year, and Imaginasian, as far as I know is a privately funded venture.

Anyways, it looks like AZN is getting the shaft, which kinda sucks b/c they apparently had a bunch of Asian American shows in development that now may never see the light of day.

Further, they're about to do something really cool, which is an awards show featuring Asian American artists/entertainers and the like.

No love.

Jeff Yang's got the scoop on AZN:

A 24-hour channel featuring unique original programming for Asian Americans, backed by the biggest and most powerful entity in the cable business? It seemed too good to be true. And apparently it was.

AZN needs to rethink it's format and it's audience! Asian Americans are not necessarily interested in Korean Folk Dramas, Thai talk shows etc...They need to show wacky stuff with English translations, good asian films for late night etc...Tell them to listen to their key audience--Young Chinese Americans--Get with it AZN!

They should get some cartoons too. What's an asian oriented channel with japanese animation? I was born in Hong kong and I grew up on that, so it'd be nice for them to have that.
